Root Canal Therapy in Dallas, TX

January 18, 2016

*Actual Patient*

Has your dentist or endodontist told you that you need root canal treatment? If so, you’re not alone. Millions of teeth are treated and saved each year with root canal, or endodontic, treatment. Learn how root canal treatment can relieve your tooth pain and save your smile.

Your teeth contain several layers: the outer protective enamel, a secondary layer of sensitive dentin, and an inner pulp that contains components commonly referred to as the “nerve” of the tooth. Each pulp chamber branches off, forming canals that lead toward the tooth root tip. These infamous root canals provide a means for the tooth to absorb what it needs from the blood and get rid of toxins or other unnecessary materials via the blood stream. A deep cavity, traumatic injury, or tooth fracture can make the canal susceptible to bacterial infection, which can kill the pulp, stimulate increased blood flow, and create pressure within the tooth. This can cause severe tooth pain and may initiate bone degeneration, tooth loss, and even more acute pain. If you see a dentist in the earliest stages of this condition, the tooth may be saved with a root canal. Otherwise, it should be extracted and replaced with a prosthetic.

Will root canal therapy hurt? Not with today’s advanced analgesics and technology. In fact, the entire process can be so comfortable that many patients doze off. Oftentimes, root canal therapy can be completed in a single appointment. We simply clean out the diseased canal, fill it with a biologically-inert substance, seal it from further infection, and you’re on your way. While some patients experience post-procedural soreness or slight tissue inflammation, these are controllable with over-the-counter analgesics. Follow-up care involves thorough home hygiene and regular dental visits for cleanings and check ups.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Every day, your teeth get a thorough workout. While the top layers are made of durable enamel and dentin, they can become discolored by wine, tea, coffee, or tobacco. Even medication, antibiotics, excessive fluoride, and aging can cause stains and discoloration.

Although you will find a vast variety of over-the-counter home teeth whitening products on the market, the professional Zoom! Whitening system elicits far greater results. If you want whiter teeth, ask us about Zoom! Whitening today. First you’ll need a thorough examination so we can tell you if this is the right teeth whitening system for you.

The Zoom! Whitening Process

Dr. Mitchell uses Zoom! Whitening to lighten smiles up to eight shades in about an hour. Millions of people across the globe have benefited from this safe, effective bleaching system, and you can, too. We’ll apply Zoom! Whitening gel to your teeth and activate it with a special light. The gel penetrates tooth enamel and dentin to melt away stains and discolorations that have been caused by food, beverages, tobacco, medications, and even the natural aging process. You’ll leave our office with the vividly white smile you’ve always wanted. Custom-made teeth whitening trays are available for at-home touch-ups as well.

If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth more gradually, custom-made trays are also available. These trays are molded to fit your teeth so that you won’t experience slipping and spotting or have unbleached back teeth. Simply fill the trays with our professional-grade teeth whitening solution and wear them daily for one to two weeks or until your teeth reach your desired level of whiteness. At-home trays can be used in conjunction with Zoom! Whitening so that you can maintain your dazzling smile without more trips to the dentist.

Five Tooth-Friendly Lunch Ideas for You and Your Children

You’ve bought the crayons, pencils and notebooks. New jeans and tennis shoes? Check. Met with the teacher? Check. Back to school season brings with it mile-long supply lists and a bevy of paperwork, tasks and chores, right? The last thing busy parents want to think about is packing a healthy lunch for their little ones and themselves.

And yet, we all know how important healthy meals are to healthy children – and healthy teeth! The most common chronic childhood disease is tooth decay and 51 million school hours are lost annually due to dental-related illnesses, so we need to consider what we’re feeding our kids.

We are here to help! At Dr. Robert Mitchell’s Dallas office, we love exploring all of the ways we can help make life easier, while thinking about how to help you have YOUR best smile.

A balanced diet is a critical element of dental health no matter what your age so consider your family’s teeth when packing the brown bags this fall and include the following smile-friendly items:

  • Sandwiches made with whole grain bread and packed with protein-rich foods like chicken or turkey to help teeth build enamel
  • Produce like celery, carrots and apples, which act like a toothbrush by massaging gums and helping to eliminate bad bacteria
  • Calcium-rich foods like low-fat milk, yogurt and string cheese, which keep teeth and the jaw bone strong and protected against tooth decay
  • Red peppers and oranges packed with Vitamin C to help strengthen blood vessels and connective tissue in the gums
  • Hard-boiled eggs and tuna fish to aid in the absorption of calcium and protein

Of course, brushing after each meal is recommended but isn’t always possible at school or work. In lieu of brushing, be sure you AND your child rinse your mouth with water for a minute after eating to help loosen any food that may be stuck in the teeth.
