What Should I Do When My Porcelain Veneer Falls Off?

Porcelain veneers have allowed millions of people to achieve more gorgeous smiles by concealing defects such as chips, gaps, cracks, stains, and even misalignments. While these lifelike dental appliances are remarkably durable, they are not invincible and can fall off due to factors like stress or age. Here’s a brief overview of what can cause a veneer to fall off its tooth and how you can handle the situation until your dentist can address it.

Why Did My Porcelain Veneer Fall Off?

Porcelain veneers can fail for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Age: While most porcelain veneers should last at least ten years, the cement holding a veneer in place can corrode over time, eventually leading to the appliance coming loose from the tooth.
  • Improper bonding: If your new veneer keeps falling out, it may not have been cemented in place properly. In this case, consider seeing another dentist to have the issue addressed.
  • Dental infection: Tooth decay can erode the enamel a porcelain veneer is attached to. If your teeth become infected, it may be necessary to remove the veneer, treat the problem, and replace it afterward.
  • Bad habits: Chewing on ice or nonfood items, using your pearly whites to open packages or bottles, and grinding your teeth are all excellent ways to damage your porcelain veneers and natural enamel. Kick these habits to keep your veneers in great shape or wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth in your sleep.

How Can I Fix My Porcelain Veneer?

If your porcelain veneer has fallen off, do not attempt to glue it back in place on your own. The adhesive products used for home repairs are quite different than those used to fix dental appliances to teeth, and many of them can have toxic effects if placed in the mouth. If you can find the lost veneer, place it in a secure and clean container so it can be transported to your dentist’s office later.

Instead, contact your dentist to schedule an appointment. This way, your veneer can be properly and safely placed back on your tooth by a qualified dental professional. If you bring your lost veneer to your dentist’s office, they may be able to cement it back on the tooth, but they may recommend replacing it in other cases.

Porcelain veneers can completely transform a smile in as few as two appointments. By giving your veneers excellent care, you can keep them in great shape for up to fifteen years.
