Did you know that an estimated 36% of Americans experience anxiety around dental appointments? Whether you’re afraid of a long and agonizing procedure or struggle with sitting still, your dentist can offer sedatives to help you relax. For example, many providers are licensed to administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your appointment.

This medication is considered safe for most people, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best solution for everyone. Continue reading to learn about this popular sedative so you can decide if it’s right for you!

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is usually administered via a mask that’s placed over your nose so that you inhale the medication. It induces a sense of giddiness of ecstasy that often results in a bad case of the giggles, hence its name. This anesthesia falls within the mildest category of sedation, so you can still see, hear, and respond to questions and orders from your dentist. You might feel tingling and have a sense of well-being, but you will remain alert.

If you’re worried that you’ll need someone to drive you home after your appointment, you’re in luck! The impact of this sedative wears off moments after the nose mask is removed, so you can continue with business as usual.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?

This form of sedation is typically incredibly safe when administered by a qualified practitioner. Researchers have studied its impact for decades, and adverse side effects are rare. This drug produces no known allergic responses, and millions of cases have been followed without finding a single death. It’s used to treat patients of all ages, including young children and the elderly.

Who Shouldn’t Have Nitrous Oxide?

Although nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation, that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. For instance, women in their first trimester of pregnancy aren’t valid candidates, so your dentist might postpone your procedure until later in the pregnancy or wait until after delivery. Also, those with certain respiratory conditions or who recently had ear surgery should avoid this medication.

It’s also worth noting that laughing gas can reduce anxiety and make you feel good, but it’s not a strong numbing agent. If you are undergoing a surgical procedure, your dentist will provide a local anesthetic to reduce sensation in your mouth in addition to a more potent sedative.

If you still feel unsure whether nitrous oxide is right for you, the best way to find out is to consult your dentist!
